The New Guard Process
Step 1 (Guard Course)
The power-to-arrest training must be completed before the issuance of a Security Guard Registration.
Eight (8) hours of continuing training must be completed annually.
All registered security guards are required to maintain their certificate of completion of the required training until the registration expires or has been canceled (BPC 7583.6). Employers are required to maintain records for the duration of the registrant’s employment.
Thirty-two (32) hours of training in security officer skills must be completed within the first six (6) months of approved registration. completed within the first six (6) months of approved registration.
Step 2 (Live Scan)
Applicants are responsible for paying all Live Scan, DOJ, FBI, and applicable state licensing fees at the time of fingerprinting.
Important: BSIS will not determine whether your application is approved or denied until all required fees have been paid, all required training certificates have been submitted, and the Live Scan background check has been completed and processed.
Refund Policy: There are no refunds from BSIS, the Live Scan operator, or Civilian Protection Services for application fees, fingerprinting fees, training fees, or any other costs if an applicant is denied registration or is otherwise determined to be ineligible by BSIS.
Step 3 (Breeze)
Applicants may apply for security guard registration online via BreEZe. The Bureau recommends submitting your application online in BreEZe as it bypasses the Cashiering Office and can reduce application processing by up to two weeks.
Upload certificate and pay fees
Please allow approximately 4-6 weeks for applications to be processed.
Processing times may be longer depending on the time it takes for the Bureau to receive responses from the DOJ and FBI and make the necessary determinations required by law.

After You Apply
Check the BSIS website regularly to monitor the status of your Security Guard Registration application.
Once your application has been approved:
• You do not have to wait for your physical Guard Card to arrive before beginning work with many employers.
• Print a copy of your approved BSIS registration status from the BSIS website.
• Carry the printed approval along with a valid government-issued photo ID while on duty until your Guard Card is received.
Note: Always follow your employer's hiring policies and verify that your BSIS registration shows as Approved before reporting for work.
